Week 1
•Begin thinking of a topic; consider your interests and/or questions
• Gather appropriate SEF forms (1, 1A, 1B, Abstract) and any others depending on your project.
•Start compiling a list of references for background reading
•Organize information as you collect it
•Consider where you might get additional help (businesses, local government offices, etc.)
•Start a logbook--record completely what you read and do--entries should be dated
•Consider someone to serve as a mentor or adult supervisor
•Start to consider a research plan once topic is developed
Week 2
•Continue to work on research plan
•Begin to collect materials and equipment needed, learn how to use any special equipment
•Consult with adult supervisor or mentor as needed
•Consider where you will conduct the research and appropriate safety concerns
•Record in logbook all that is considered, notes that are taken, and what is done on the project
•Begin the first draft of the research paper
Week 3
•Finish setting up your experiment
•Begin testing and experimenting
•Continue gathering information and from outside sources, discuss with your mentor or adult supervisor
•Record in the logbook any and all progress that is made
•Consider how photographs might be used to tell your research story
• Continue reading background information, become the 'expert' on your topic
•Begin second draft of the research paper
Week 4
•Continue experimenting and collecting data
•Finalize second draft of the research paper
•Continue to record notes to the logbook to reflect any and all work done
• Continue to take photographs of your project •Continue research for additional information
Week 5
•Continue with the experimenting and collection of data
•Consult with your mentor or adult supervisor about progress
•Continue recording notes and observations in the logbook
•Finish up photographing the project
Week 6
•Begin preparing for the visual display (titles, labels, photographs, layout of backboard)
•Begin data analysis, consider what types of charts would be informative on the display
•Consult with your mentor or adult supervisor about the data collected
•Record all raw data in the logbook along with any other notes and records
Week 7
•Complete data analysis and review the results
•Record any and all progress in your logbook
•Begin designing and constructing the display, remember size and safety limitations
Week 8
•Finish display board
•Print any text for the background of the display
•Write the abstract on official form
•Continue to keep accurate records of work done in the logbook
Week 9
•Write final draft of the research paper
•Check carefully the display for spelling, punctuation, and typos, as well as the research paper
•Review and make appropriate changes to visual display
•Record any notes and thoughts in the logbook
Week 10
• Proofread the final report
• Set up the display and check for mistakes or adjustments
• Practice presenting the research and answering questions with your mentor or adult supervisor
• Double-check to make sure you have all the parts of the project (logbook, forms, research paper)
